You should always know what happens next

A lot of people describe their experience with financial advice the same way. A first meeting that felt like a sales call, a proposal that arrived without much explanation, then long stretches of silence. We built the James Walter Process so none of that is a mystery. Here is every step, in order, from the first conversation through the years that follow.

The process splits into two parts. Four steps to get started, which happen once and in order, and then an ongoing rhythm of quarterly and annual meetings for as long as we work together. The first part is about building the plan. The second is about keeping it true as your life moves.

Phase One

Getting started

Four meetings, in this order. By the end of them you have a plan in place and you understand exactly why every piece of it is there.

  • Connection Call

This first one runs both ways. We are learning about you, and you are deciding whether we are worth a second conversation. Nothing gets signed and nothing gets sold.

    • Discover your priorities and what matters most to your family's financial future.
    • Explore the values and principles that guide your important decisions.
    • Build a foundation of trust and mutual understanding.
    • Assess whether our approach aligns with your needs and expectations.
  • Alignment Meeting

Now we show our work. How we invest, how we plan, and where we think your attention belongs. We spend most of it on the factors we can actually control, because the rest is noise.

    • Share our investment philosophy and walk through our planning methodology.
    • Identify your core priorities and focus on the factors within our control.
    • Develop the foundation for your personalized Investment Policy Statement.
    • Take a 48 hour reflection period to be sure this partnership feels right for both parties.
  • Strategic Solution Meeting

This is where the plan arrives. We have gone through everything you currently have in place and we bring back what we would change, what we would keep, and why.

    • Comprehensive review of your current financial, estate, and philanthropic strategies.
    • Present tailored recommendations and integrated solutions for your wealth management, estate, and legacy goals.
  • Implementation Meeting

We handle the mechanics and walk you through everything so everything remains fully transparent.

    • Review your welcome materials and client resources.
    • Complete online platform setup and account access.
    • Execute your personalized investment strategy and fund transfers.
    • Walk through your first portfolio statement and reporting system.
Hours, Built Into the Process

The Purposeful Pause

After the Alignment Meeting, both sides step away for 48 hours. No follow up call in the meantime, no pressure to commit in the room. You think it over on your own time, and so do we. If we cannot establish a foundation of trust and understanding, we will not entertain a partnership any further.

Take a 48 hour reflection period to ensure this partnership feels right for both parties.

Phase Two

How we work together from here

Your life is dynamic, everchanging. Your strategy should be too.

  • Quarterly Strategic Session

A regular check that the portfolio is still doing what it was built to do, and a standing invitation to tell us what has changed.

    • Analyze portfolio alignment with your Investment Policy Statement.
    • Discuss any life changes that may require plan modifications.
    • Update estate planning, tax strategies, and philanthropic initiatives.
  • Annual Review

The wider view. Where the year landed, where you stand against the goals we set, and what is worth doing differently next year.

    • Review market conditions and their impact on your wealth management strategy.
    • Assess progress toward financial goals and make tactical adjustments as needed.
    • Preview upcoming opportunities and potential portfolio optimizations.
Common Questions

The process, answered.

  • What happens in a first meeting?

The Connection Call is a conversation, not a pitch. We learn your priorities and the values behind your decisions, and you learn how we work. Nothing is signed and no products are presented. It exists so both sides can decide whether this is a fit.

  • What is an Investment Policy Statement?

It is the written framework for how your portfolio is managed: your objectives, time horizon, risk tolerance, and the rules the portfolio is held to. It means decisions get measured against an agreed standard rather than made reactively. We start building yours in the Alignment Meeting and review the portfolio against it every quarter.

  • How often will we meet?

Quarterly for a strategic session, and annually for a fuller review. Beyond that, reach out whenever something changes. The scheduled meetings are a floor, not a ceiling.

  • Do I have to decide right away?

No. The 48 hour reflection period is built into the process for exactly that reason. We would rather you decide away from the table than in the room.

Next Step

It starts with one conversation.

Schedule a Connection Call. We will learn what matters to you, you will learn how we work, and we will both decide from there. If you would rather get your bearings first, start with our financial assessment or see what we do.
